Program Notes
Composed by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Arranged by Ian Deterling.
One of Rachmaninoff’s best-known works, Prelude in C# Minor (also known as The Bells of Moscow) is one in a set of five piano pieces entitled Morceaux de fantasisie. This adaptation is arranged into five parts plus percussion (up to nine percussionists). The instrumentation is as follows:
Part 1: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Trumpet, Violin
Part 2: Clarinet, Trumpet, Alto Sax., Violin
Part 3: Tenor Sax., Clarinet, Alto Sax., Horn, Viola
Part 4: Tenor Sax., Euphonium (T.C.), Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Cello
Part 5: Euphonium (T.C.), Bass Clarinet, Bari Sax., Trombone, Euphonium, Bassoon, Cello, Contrabass, Tuba
Percussion 1: Suspended Cymbal, Snare Drum, Bass Drum
Percussion 2: Crash Cymbals, Tambourine, Tam-tam (or Gong)
Mallet Percussion: Chimes, Bells
Timpani: 3 or 2 Drums (if only 2 available, replace all the Bbs with Ds)
Other performance notes:
There are a few places where octave transposition is optional if needed (marked both in the score and parts):
-Flute and Trumpet (part 1); 30-31 and 36-37
-Tenor Sax. and F Horn (part 4); 15-20
Percussion 1 is able to be covered by 2 or 3 people.
-Suspended Cymbal and Snare Drum can be covered by 1 percussionist.
Percussion 2 is entirely optional - and is able to be covered by 2 or 3 people.
-Tambourine and Tam-tam can be covered by 1 percussionist.
Mallet Percussion can be covered by 1 or 2 people.
I also feel the need to at least mention that although this is the C# Minor Prelude, it has been transposed to the key of D Minor to make it easier on the musicians!
