FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I order hard copies of your music?

  • A: I currently only offer digital copies of my compositions and arrangements on my website. The benefit of this is that you will have immediate access to the sheet music once you purchase it!

  • If you require hard copies, you may purchase them through J.W.Pepper

Q. Do you accept Purchase Orders?

  • A: Yes! I understand that they are an important way for directors, music departments, and school districts to access new music. If you would like to submit a Purchase Order, please send it as a PDF document to iandeterling@gmail.com. Once I receive your email, I will respond with an invoice that can be used to complete payment. Once the order is processed, you will receive the sheet music via email.

Q: How does a ‘digital download’ work?

Download page for Duet in C Minor, Op. 3

  • A: All of my works on my website are delivered digitally in the form of PDF documents - this allows you to download and print the music immediately after purchasing it. Once your order has been processed, you will be emailed a link where you can download the sheet music.

  • Note: some works have the score and parts separated into different PDF files (see image example of Duet in C Minor, Op. 3).

  • Note: the sheet music will be stamped with a watermark in the bottom left corner to help discourage illegal file sharing. This watermark will not interfere with the readability of the sheet music.

Q. How do commissions work?

  • A: Generally, commissions go something like this:

  • I’m contacted by someone with a proposed idea for a commission.

  • We discuss instrumentation, duration, any specific limitations I need to be aware of (especially when writing for younger musicians), overall budget, and timeline of when it needs to be completed.

  • Assuming we agree on the terms, I accept the commission.

  • When I begin composing the piece, I’ll send weekly progress updates. These are usually in the form of sheet music (PDFs) with accompanying audio files.

  • The score and each part will have a ‘Commissioned by…’ header on the first page.

  • I complete the composition by the agreed deadline.

  • The person/people/ensemble that commissioned the work premiere the piece; I wait until after the premiere to post the sheet music for sale.

  • For me, each piece is so unique that any attempt at creating a table to determine the price is essentially useless. If you are interested in commissioning a new piece, just contact me here and we’ll talk about it. An important note - I’m generally booked at least 12 months out - so keep that in mind for the timeline.

Q. Do I need to print my purchased sheet music right away?

  • A: No, you can download the music and print it whenever you need it. Once you have the downloaded PDF, internet access is not required to view or print the music.

Q. I can’t find the download link - what do I do now?

  • A: Depending on your email settings, it may have been sent to your junk/spam folder. If you still can’t find the email with the download link, just contact me here and I’ll resolve the issue.

Q. I can’t find my sheet music and I’ve lost my download link - what do I do now?

  • A: No worries! Just contact me here and I’ll resend the email with the download link.

Q. I no longer have access to the sheet music - what do I do now?

  • A: No worries! My website is set to max out at three download attempts (to help prevent against illegal downloading). Just contact me here and I’ll reset the download limit for you.

Q. What is flexible instrumentation?

  • A: I have many works (both chamber and large ensemble) available for flexible instrumentation. This simply means that each part can be played by a variety of instruments. For example, my Duet in C Minor, Op. 3 is adapted for flexible instrumentation:

    • The top part (Part 1) can be played by a Flute, English Horn, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Horn in F, of Viola.

    • The bottom part (Part 2) can be played by a Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn in F, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Viola, Cello, or Contrabass.

  • Any combination of the available instruments is possible.

Q. What is SendOwl?

  • A: SendOwl is a London-based company that I use to sell digital copies of my sheet music through my website. When you purchase a work, you will be emailed by SendOwl Downloads (noreply@sendowl.com) with the link to download the sheet music.
