Program Notes
Writing music is like creating abstract stories or movies; the various melodies and motifs are individual characters while the accompaniments are different settings where these characters develop and interact with one another. As a very visual person, I tend to form images in my mind whenever I’m creating music. As my compositions develop and unfold over time, my mind connects the various melodies and different sections in a way that (to me) makes sense as a cohesive narrative. This playful concerto is about my parents’ dog, Bella, an adorable and loving yet mischievous golden retriever. The sprightly rhythms and agile melodies follow Bella as she explores the woods, gets into some shenanigans, and winds down as she eventually crawls into her cozy doggie bed for a long nap.
This concerto is an adaptation/expansion of a duet I composed in 2020 titled Duet in D-Flat Major. Darrin C. Milling (Bass Trombone Principal at São Paulo State Symphony) requested that I adapt the duet (originally for Horn in F and Bass Trombone) into a concerto for Bass Trombone and String Orchestra.
This concerto is in dedication to Darrin C. Milling for his performance with the Orquestra Sinfônica do Teatro Nacional Cláudio Santoro.
Performance Notes
This concerto was written to have the first violins seated on the left and the second violins seated opposite on the right. This seating will emphasize interlocking phrasing between the two violin sections, allowing notes from the melody to flick back and forth across the concert hall. This happens throughout the concerto, but particular sections I wish to emphasize:
Movement I. - 69-74
Movement I. -173-185
Movement II. - 124-127
Movement II. - 158-161
